I learned a great deal about the dual role played by many university leaders, external and internal. I also received hands-on training in working with diverse faculty, dealing with difficult staff situations, and interacting with university research offices.
One key insight for me was learning how to manage relationships with companies and sell the research capabilities of my team, just not my own accomplishments. I also learned about the different ways that centers can be funded, and how they can work in a symbiotic way with the departments that house the faculty to avoid competition.
This is an initiative officially part of the WNCG, but is operated like a second separate center. My idea was to build a research center that brought together sensing, communications, and data analytics with applications to automotive systems.
I created a low-overhead organization, where company funds are used towards research. This was an organic process that involves members who believe in the vision and work together to achieve common goals.
I learned about the value of marketing the program and capabilities of all members. In particular, how to talk with faculty, understand their research, and translate it into ideas for the companies. In essence, I realized how to build a research center around an idea, and obtain stakeholders who bought into that vision with real money, and faculty who worked together to realize that vision.
